IKEA Self Scan Checkouts
Goal of the project:
Redesign the self-scan check-outs at IKEA Delft
Design Process
Here I present the project’s stages, while highlighting the lessons learned in relation to each step.
PHASE 1: ANALYSIS
The first phase was key to immerse ourselves in the context to be able to identify the current issues. This way we detailed a design brief to guide the next steps.
Current product analysis
● Be realistic when deciding on the design direction and scope● Don’t try to fix everything
Design Brief
Analyse problems and define design goals in terms of: ● Function● Interaction● Experience
My primary activities in the design process
● Observation & cognitive walkthrough
PHASE 2: CONCEPTUALISATION
The second phase consisted of ideating and coming up with three fundamentally different concepts to redesign the current context. These concepts were tested with mockups to gather insights and propose a redesign proposal.
3 concepts
● Fundamentally different: explore the whole scope
Mockup testing
● Quick tests with non-fully functional mockups can give many valuable insights about the core of the concepts
Concept selection
● When testing, make an exhaustive test setup: what needs to be tested and how. Also, what reliable measuring tools will be used to obtain trustworthy results.
Design Strategy
Decision: Combine the 3 concepts● Ambitious & Risky● Believe in our ideas: Importance of having a dedicated team and seeing the bigger picture
Redesign Proposal
● Knowledge gained in the previous mockup test could be unsuitable, because of the risky design strategy● Visions/expectations can probe wrong in the user test
My primary activities in the design process
● Prototyping, test setup, evaluation tools, analysis, observation and interviews ● 3D modelling and rendering, and conceptualisation
PHASE 3: DETAILING
The last phase consists of testing the redesign proposal in the real context to obtain the most relevant insights, to finally define the final design.
User Test
In the real context
● Importance of a detailed script, anticipate and respond to unexpected situations
● Taking notes on test setup printouts while observing works very well; comparable data
Final Design Proposal
● Believe in your team and in your ideas● Confidently present your ideas to convey the value of your design
My primary activities in the design process
● Prototyping, test setup, evaluation tools, analysis, observation and interviews ● 3D modelling and rendering, and design realization
